WELCOME TO YEAR 2

Mrs Udeme Umoren
Key Stage 1 Phase Lead and English Lead.

In year 2 we are committed to a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum which enthuses and motivates children, extending and enriching their knowledge and understanding of the world we live in – so they are able to make a valuable contribution as they grow.

Year 2 Curriculum framework recognises that children learn best when they are actively engaged, can make links in their learning and are given opportunities to talk about and apply their learning in different contexts.  As such our curriculum, in addition to meeting all statutory requirements and challenge, is contextualised and learning is enriched through the arts and visits to places of interest.

We continue with the ReadWriteInc phonics programme for children who are still struggling with reading and writing.  By the end of Year 2, most children will have a secure grasp of complicated letter strings, enabling them to decode two and three syllable words.  Reading then progresses from learning to read, to reading to learn.

OUR CURRICULUM

At St. John’s Primary School, we are passionate about the curriculum and always plan imaginative and creative lessons, with the children at the centre of every decision we make. We want the best for our children, and ensure all lessons are suitably supportive and challenging for all individuals and their needs.

We like the children to be responsible for their own learning, and support them to choose work that will challenge their understanding and extend their knowledge.
